Managing invasive plants on Great Plains grasslands: A discussion of current challenges

نویسندگان

چکیده

The Great Plains of North America encompass approximately 1,300,000 km2 land from Texas to Saskatchewan. integrity these lands is under continual assault by long-established and newly-arrived invasive plant species, which can threaten native species diminish values ecological goods services degrading desired grassland resources. are a mixture privately publicly owned lands, leads patchwork varying management goals strategies for controlling plants. Continually updated knowledge required efficient effective threats posed changing environments Here we discuss current challenges, contemporary strategies, tools their integration, in hopes presenting resource new experienced managers others involved making decisions regarding the Plains.

Using Natural Range of Variation to Set Decision Thresholds: A Case Study for Great Plains Grasslands

Abstract Natural range of variation (NRV) may be used to establish decision thresholds or action assessment points when ecological thresholds are either unknown or do not exist for attributes of interest in a managed ecosystem. The process for estimating NRV involves identifying spatial and temporal scales that adequately capture the heterogeneity of the ecosystem; compiling data for the attrib...

Invasive Plants and Wildlife Habitat Invasive Plants and Wildlife Habitat Effects of Plant Invasions on Wildlife in Desert Grasslands

Like all grasslands across North America, the distribution of desert grasslands has been reduced markedly, and remnants have been altered extensively by humans. In Arizona, NewMexico, Texas, USA, and in Mexico, desert grasslands have been invaded by dozens of non-native plants, especially perennial grasses that evolved in arid systems with similar climate and disturbance regimes. In desert gras...

Contrasting above- and belowground sensitivity of three Great Plains grasslands to altered rainfall regimes.

Intensification of the global hydrological cycle with atmospheric warming is expected to increase interannual variation in precipitation amount and the frequency of extreme precipitation events. Although studies in grasslands have shown sensitivity of aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) to both precipitation amount and event size, we lack equivalent knowledge for responses of belowgroun...

The sensitivity of carbon exchanges in Great Plains grasslands to precipitation variability

In the Great Plains, grassland carbon dynamics differ across broad gradients of precipitation and temperature, yet finer-scale variation in these variables may also affect grassland processes. Despite the importance of grasslands, there is little information on how fine-scale relationships compare between them regionally. We compared grassland C exchanges, energy partitioning and precipitation ...
